Is Your Facility Ready
for NFPA 660?

NFPA 660 Standard for Combustible Dusts and Particulate Solids is the new unified standard for combustible dust safety, replacing NFPA 652 and several other legacy standards. If your facility handles, processes, or stores combustible powders, NFPA 660 certainly applies to you.

At Stonehouse Process Safety, we specialize in helping manufacturers, processors, and users meet NFPA 660 requirements through:

  • Combustible dust testing in our ISO 17025-accredited laboratory
  • Dust Hazards Analyses (DHAs) performed by industry-leading experts
  • Management Systems development and gap analysis
  • Emergency Planning and Response
  • Site audits, consulting, and training for full compliance

We work with clients across the United States and internationally to reduce explosion risks, protect personnel, and stay ahead of regulatory requirements

What is NFPA 660?

NFPA 660: Standard for Combustible Dusts was introduced by the National Fire Protection Association to consolidate multiple dust safety standards — including NFPA 652, NFPA 664, NFPA 655, NFPA 654, NFPA 484, and NFPA 61 — into one easy-to-follow framework.

It covers:

  • Combustibility classification and powder testing
  • Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA)
  • Ignition source control
  • Explosion protection and mitigation
  • Housekeeping
  • Operational procedures and management systems
  • Employee and contractor training

If you previously followed NFPA 652 or another NFPA dust standard, you’ll need to update your practices to align with NFPA 660.

NFPA 660-Compliant Combustible Dust Testing

The foundation of NFPA 660 compliance is understanding your dust’s fire and explosion properties. We offer fast, accurate, and accredited testing, including:

Combustibility and Explosibility Testing

  • Go/No-Go Explosibility and Combustibility Screening (NFPA 652/660)
  • 20L Sphere Test for Kst and Pmax
  • Ignition Sensitivity Testing
  • Minimum Explosible Concentration (MEC)
  • Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE)
  • Minimum Auto-Ignition Temperature (Cloud) (MAIT)
  • Hot Surface Layer Ignition Temperature (LIT)
  • Self-Heating Screening and Isothermal testing
  • Electrostatic Chargeability, Volume Resistivity, Surface Resistivity, Charge Decay, and discharge testing

Thermal Stability (Self-Heating) Testing

  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)
  • Accelerating Rate Calorimetry (ARC)
  • Grewer Oven
  • Bulk Powder
  • Isothermal Basket
  • Aerated Powder
  • Air Over Layer

All tests are conducted at our state-of-the-art laboratory, one of the largest and busiest of its kind in North America.

Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA) – A core NFPA 660 Requirement

A Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA) is a mandatory requirement under NFPA 660 for any facility where combustible dusts are present.

Stonehouse provides DHA services that are:

  • Comprehensive – we evaluate all relevant processes, equipment, and storage areas
  • Actionable – with prioritized, cost-effective recommendations
  • Compliant – aligned with the latest NFPA 660 requirements

We also offer DHA updates and revalidations that are required at least every 5 years.
