The manufacture of paper and cardboard from pulp can lead to fire and explosion risk, principally through the creation of dust as a by-product. The paper dust produced is combustible and can give rise to fire, flash fire, and explosion risks under some circumstances.
Processing of paper mechanically – such as trimming, cutting, punching etc., – can create sparks or embers. These may self-extinguish, but if they travel on to reach cyclones, filters, or presses through mechanical or pneumatic conveying systems they have the opportunity to reach dispersed dust in higher concentrations and fire or dust explosion can result.
We partner with our clients in the pulp and paper industry to help them identify, assess, prevent, and control fire, explosion, and accidental loss of containment hazards in their operations.
Our services include expert consulting, laboratory testing, and training in the specialist fields of dust explosion & fire hazards, electrostatic hazards & processing problems, gas & vapor flammability hazards, Process Hazard Analysis, Process Safety Management, and incident investigation.
