What is a Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA)?

A Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA), according to NFPA 652, is a formalized process for identifying and evaluating the fire, deflagration, and explosion hazards associated with dusts and particulate solids in your facility.

The DHA provides recommendations to manage these hazards. The DHA has to be performed or led by a qualified person and should produce results that are documented. It should include necessary actions for change to your operations or facilities as necessary. The DHA should identify safe operating ranges, check safeguards are in place to mitigate the hazards and should recommend additional safeguards where warranted.

Understanding Dust Explosion Prevention & Protection

There are dozens of dust explosions throughout the U.S. every year, many of which are not publicly reported. These explosions occur in industries as diverse as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, plastics/polymers, metals and many others. Dust fires, flash fires, and explosions lead to injuries and fatalities, destruction of plant and equipment, and lost production and revenue.

For a dust explosion to occur, five conditions are required concurrently (dust explosion pentagon). These are:

dust-explosion-diagram

Explosible (combustible, flammable) dust

Small particle size to support flame spread

Dust cloud formation

Concentration above Minimum Explosible Concentration (MEC)

Oxidant

Typically, oxygen in air

Ignition source

Occurrence of an energetic ignition source will result in a deflagration

Confinement

If the deflagration is confined and produces a pressure sufficient to rupture the confining enclosure, the event is an “explosion”

Removal of one or more of these conditions is the key to explosion prevention, but depending on the assessment of risk,  prevention measures often require supplementing with explosion protection and isolation measures (e.g. explosion relief venting).

Without proper evaluation through a Dust Hazards Analysis, dust fires, flash fires, and explosions can be as unpredictable as they are dangerous. They are a unique and complex phenomenon; no two dust explosions are quite the same.

What Does Stonehouse Process Safety Provide for Dust Explosion Prevention & Protection Services?

At Stonehouse Process Safety we identify hazards, assess risks, recommend practical control measures and work with you as an independent partner to provide the expert support services you need as you implement change to prevent dust explosions and fires and protect against their consequences. Whether you are responsible for an entire plant or simply a process line, we can undertake a comprehensive DHA to ensure that you are in compliance with the requirements of NFPA 652.

Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA)

Our Approach

A Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA) is a systematic process used to improve plant safety by identifying the specific combustible dust hazards associated with an operation or process.

To perform a DHA, we visit your facility to review the operations and processes to identify potential dust explosion hazards, determine the effectiveness of your existing safety measures,  and develop a plan to eliminate or mitigate those hazards.

A Dust Hazards Analysis procedure normally involves the following steps:

1.

Reviewing the fire and explosion characteristics of the powders you handle in your facility.

2.

Identifying locations where hazardous dust accumulations and/or explosible dust cloud atmospheres could be present under normal and foreseeable abnormal conditions.

3.

Identifying potential ignition sources that could be present under normal and foreseeable abnormal conditions.

4.

Evaluating all of the potential dust fire, flash fire, and explosion hazards in the process and facility.

5.

Reviewing the effectiveness of your existing measures for ensuring safety from dust fires and explosions.

6.

Ensuring safety through properly defined fire and explosion prevention and protection measures – defining a clear “Basis of Safety” for your operations.

We will work closely with you to learn more about your specific operations and develop a plan for the most practical and cost-effective approaches available to reduce your dust explosion risk.

We can also serve as a resource to help you with implementation of the recommendations. Our support services provide you the peace of mind that comes from working with highly experienced specialists.
